Contact Mealtime Together and complete the New Client Questionnaire to assess whether this feeding program is the right fit for your child. Upon completion, we will schedule an in-home evaluation and determine the course of treatment for your child.
Consultative feeding therapy sessions last 1-2 hours per visit in your home and are conducted on a weekly or biweekly basis. During these sessions, the feeding therapist observes 1 meal and works on 1-2 specific goals to strengthen your child's feeding skills and improve mealtime behaviors. Caregiver feedback and mealtime recommendations are provided for the family to work on between sessions. If sufficient progress is not made within 3-4 months, it may be recommended that your child transfer to our intensive therapy program.
Based on results from the evaluation or your child's progress in consultative therapy sessions, it may be recommended that your child enter our intensive feeding therapy program. Intensive feeding therapy sessions are 4-6 hours per day in your home, at your child's school, or in other settings in which your child regularly eats and are conducted for 2 consecutive days per month or 1 day on a biweekly schedule. During these sessions, the feeding therapist works directly with your child across 2-3 scheduled meals (or multiple mini meals) focusing on individualized short-term goals. Further, the feeding therapist provides meal plans and food lists and conducts caregiver training so that the family can successfully apply mealtime modifications and work on goals between therapy sessions. Intensive therapy sessions continue on a monthly basis until your child meets his/her long-term feeding goals and/or your child and family no longer need intensive feeding support.
Children need practice to learn a new skill or acclimate to feeding therapy advancements. Caregivers are trained each therapy session to work on mealtime modifications and techniques between sessions. Further, the feeding therapist will remain in contact with the caregiver to answer any questions.
Longer therapy sessions allow the feeding therapist to observe the child's every-day routines, mealtime behaviors, and environment to set realistic goals, meal schedule, and treatment plan for a more successful outcome with feeding therapy. Further, it provides an optimal amount of time to ensure caregivers are trained in conducting meals between therapy sessions.
